Fata Morgana – An Illusion of the Past

"Fata Morgana" is a term with multiple definitions given by how people have perceived it over time.

From a physics point of view, this is an optical illusion that occurs due to the refraction of light rays through layers of air with different temperatures. This mirage most often appears on flat and large surfaces such as hot plains, deserts or seas. Some linguists believe that the name “Morgana” means “born from the sea”.

Today, this expression has the meaning of deceptive appearance, fleeting illusion, ghost, deceptive dream, delusion.

Sometimes we can also use these expressions in our love life when we think about a past relationship.

Fata Morgana Legend

In Celtic mythology, she has another meaning. According to legend, Morgana was the half-sister of King Arthur who inherited those magical powers from her mother. Her most famous magical abilities were those of healing and shape-shifting, hence the association with optical illusion.

In older stories, Arthur and Morgana have a child through incest, named Mordred. The king does not accept the existence of this child and disowns him, so that later his own child becomes his father's enemy.

Without Morgana – the ghost of the past

We have life lessons to learn from every story we hear.

We have all experienced at some point in our lives a love story that is hard to let go of and that has followed us for many years after it ended.

This “fata Morgana” may be the illusion of something that no longer exists in the present but you are trying to bring it back and you get stuck. You think about that person all the time, maybe you want to write to them, maybe you want to hear from them again, hold them in your arms but you only bring a “ghost” into the present. You focus so much on what was and what could have been if you had not made a mistake that you don’t allow yourself to learn your lesson to move on to the next relationship.

We can make a reference to the relationship between Arthur and Morgana as something forbidden. That love that comes and floods you with intense emotions but that you cannot manifest, that would be the symbolism of incest portrayed in this story. Some will manifest this love without thinking about the consequences but sooner or later, they will not hesitate to appear.

We've all heard the expression "love is blind", but the best advice I could give would be to keep your eyes peeled when you feel it, so it doesn't blind you. J

We all overlook those "red flags" when we're caught in the spell of love and only notice them later when the love settles down and only then will it embarrass you!

They will start conflicts, dissatisfactions and misunderstandings that if you don't know how to manage you will take very personally and maybe you will get the wrong idea about love or relationship. Most people will leave the relationship at this stage, with the excuse "we don't get along anymore" but the other partner will remain "abandoned" with a thousand questions that don't give them peace and which they will try to answer on their own, therefore, they remain stuck.

The same thing happens in cases where one of the potential partners is "ghosting", meaning in Romanian he disappears like a ghost, but at some point you will most likely have to give some explanations for this behavior.

Just like his own child, he came to take what was rightfully his from his father who disowned him. The symbolism behind it would be that in life you have two options: either you assume the consequences of the choices you make or you don't accept them, but sooner or later they will come upon you like a tsunami much more devastating than in the first situation.

Fata Morgana and the magic of revenge

In the mythological story, the child comes not only to take what is rightfully his, but to avenge his mother.

In everyday life, Karma returns but not in the same form we expect. Many will not realize that they need to "pay" for something they did a long time ago so they will position themselves defensively towards what is happening to them.

As the old saying goes, “revenge begets more revenge,” and more chain reactions will be set in motion. You will try to get justice for yourself without thinking that only the Divine can do justice, just as Mordred tries to get justice for himself.

There are many cases where parents divorce and the resentment between them affects the child. Each will try to pull the child to their side to hurt the other parent without realizing that the one who actually suffers the most is the child.

A symbolic aspect of this legend represents the duality of human nature or the inner conflicts of the child especially in such cases between parents. King Arthur, the representative of good with moral values ​​such as honor, loyalty and justice while Morgana, the representative of the dark side of humanity uses temptation, magic and greed for power.

She tests Artur by presenting him with temptations and challenges to test his moral integrity. Their relationship can be seen as a story of the struggle between good and evil, the temptation of power and the consequences of our choices.    

Fata Morgana and the power of femininity

Someone once gave me some advice, "never stand in front of an angry or wronged woman, it's like putting yourself in front of a train and expecting it not to run you over" and since then, my life has been a lot easier, especially in relationships.

Morgana is often depicted as a powerful and magical witch representing feminine power and mystery. She is seen as both benevolent and malevolent, influencing the fate of both the king and his kingdom.

You may have heard it before, a woman will always take what you give her, multiply it, and give it back to you. If you give her love, she will multiply it, magnify it, and give it back to you, the same thing happens if you betray her.

He will take that betrayal, multiply it and give it back to you, it sucks, I know... but it's up to you as a man to know how to be assertive and contain it in moments of anger.

Fata Morgana – life and death

Some versions of the legend present Morgana as Arthur's savior after his mortal wound. In this context, she can be seen as a figure of death and rebirth, symbolizing the cycle of life and death and the hope of eternal life.

Women are creators of life. We all came into this world through our mother, and she was the first woman you as a man related to. You will seek your partner in the “image and likeness” of your mother and you will behave with her as you would now behave with your mother.
